On Thursday 13 July 1995 residents in Chicago awoke to a blistering day with temperatures reaching about 106 degrees Fahrenheit. Meteorologists warned Chicagoans of a two-day heat wave, however the weather conditions continued for one-week, killing more than 700 people above the normal mortality rate.
