LONDON -- Cadbury Schweppes PLC is acquiring Pfizer Inc.'s Adams division for $4.2 billion, vaulting the chocolate powerhouse into the number two position in the world chewing gum market behind the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Co.
Four power brands represent more than 70 percent of Adams' sales -- Halls medicated drops; Trident, Dentyne and Dentyne Ice sugarfree gum; and a bubble gum range that includes Bubblicious. The British multinational's gum portfolio also includes the Stimorol, V6 and Dirol brands acquired last summer when it purchased Denmark's Dandy A/S.
