In ancient Rome, before the gladiators fought, spectators at the Colosseum were treated to warm-up acts that got them in the mood for blood sport: comical competitions, animal acts and the like.
Competitive eating would have fit right in.
In case you've somehow missed this cultural phenomenon, competitive eating involves ingesting as much as you can of a particular foodstuff - hot dogs, say, or buffalo wings or matzo balls - in a set period of time.
