MILWAUKEE (AP) -- A Wisconsin dairy farmer who thought his cows' milk was something special made a French-style nutty Gruyere to win the distinction of top U.S. cheese.
The 10-pound wheel of Pleasant Ridge Reserve from Uplands Cheese beat 650 other cheeses from 21 states Wednesday in the U.S. Championship Cheese Contest in Milwaukee.
Dodgeville dairy farmer Michael Gingrich became a licensed cheesemaker because he thought his cows' milk was so good, and now he has the contest's top prize to prove it.
"This is the Super Bowl for cheese," Gingrich said.
