WHEN El Hadji Diouf came out of Africa via France to play football here, somebody must have forgotten to tell him that the average British male would rather have his front teeth knocked out by a pickaxe handle than be spat upon.

There is something about being on the receiving end of a glutinous stream of saliva which we find especially repugnant.

Not only does it make the flesh creep but it is also such a vile affront to manhood that a violent reaction is almost impossible to resist.

We can only assume Diouf was unaware of this.

Otherwise, surely, he would never have risked aiming his despicable projectile ...
