Mar. 16--AMMAN, Jordan -- During the 1991 Persian Gulf War, Jordan's King Hussein earned the wrath of Washington for his strategic embrace of Saddam Hussein, a man he described as an "Arab patriot."

Now, as the United States prepares for a possible new assault on Baghdad, Jordan is discreetly siding with Washington.

Although Jordan maintains friendly relations with Iraq, the country's ruler -- Hussein's son, King Abdullah II -- has allowed American troops to set up camps in the remote eastern portion of the nation near western Iraq.
