Improving teacher preparation is among the most prominent reforms suggested for education today. Numerous governmental and private groups have taken up the issue of teacher quality and teacher preparation as a means of improving the nation's schools. For example, the U.S. Department of Education sponsored a conference on teacher quality in Washington, D.C., in January 2000, which attracted several hundred teams of representatives from higher education and their partners to focus on issues of teacher preparation, recruitment, and induction.
