Once, they were specialists at fighting in the mountains. Now, they'll fight wherever America sends them. They are members of the Army's 10th Mountain Division, known as the premier "quick reaction force" among light infantry.
They've endured an array of cultures, climates and environments during their deployments. They've battled al Qaeda fighters on the cold, rocky slopes of Afghanistan, boredom and heat in the Sinai Desert and drug-confused Somali militiamen in the urban madness of Mogadishu.
