Guitarist Phil Upchurch was a sideman for Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf and Curtis Mayfield, cut two-dozen soulful solo albums of elegant r&b and funky jazz, performed on countless sessions, soundtracks and commercials, worked with the great hard-bop organist Jimmy Smith, and toured the world with George Benson during the ``Breezin' '' years.
So it was unexpected when the prolific musician, whose repertoire includes the work of Bach, Chopin, Gershwin, Monk and Miles, quickly agreed to jam with a reporter who also plays guitar during an interview this week.
