SAN FERNANDO - When Mayor Pro Tem Maribel De La Torre looks around her community, she notes that most of the movers and shakers attended private schools, herself included.
And like many upwardly mobile Latino families in the city of San Fernando, she sends her two small children to private schools rather than the city's troubled public schools.
Now, as the Los Angeles Unified School District prepares to build the first new school in the city in decades, De La Torre and the City Council are pressing the district to build a world-class high school that will specialize in performing arts and technology.
