As part of a national education campaign, federal health officials came to Seattle this month to inform physicians and the public about buprenorphine, a new alternative to methadone that helps kick addiction to opioids such as heroin and prescription painkillers.
Buprenorphine is the first anti-addiction drug that can be prescribed by physicians in their offices. Methadone is only prescribed through drug-treatment clinics.
