CARLSBAD -- "Sports City" has beckoned K2 Inc., a diversified sporting goods maker that is pushing to put even more variety into its product line.

Management at the $600 million, publicly traded company sees plenty of reasons to uproot its headquarters from Los Angeles and move it to Carlsbad this month. K2 will share a building with laser-maker Melles Griot near the entrance to McClellan Palomar Airport.

There K2 plans to continue a growth push.

"I think we can get much bigger than a billion" dollars in annual sales, said K2 Chairman Richard Heckmann, who has been the company's chief executive since October.
