WHILE CATFISH FARMER James E. Popejoy Sr. is waiting for the price of catfish to improve, he has turned to bailing hay to generate income for his fish farm.
"I am maxed out on all, my operating loans, and there is no reason why the lending institutions would advance me any money for feed," said 66-year-old Popejoy, owner of JEPSR Fish Farm in Chicot County.
The U.S. catfish industry generally blames imports from Vietnam for wreaking havoc on its $400 million industry.
