Red crime scene tape roped off the roadway Thursday near North Eugene High School where a 17-year-old student was crushed by a careening pickup truck as she walked home from school.

Students stood in small clusters, some praying, some crying, some wondering aloud about the crash that killed Lindsay Mae Tracey, a junior at the school.

What caused the truck to veer out of control remained a mystery Thursday night, one that Eugene police hoped to solve with the help of the pickup driver, who was not injured. Investigators were interviewing the 23-year-old driver and did not release his name.
