Radio Luxembourg began life in an obscure duchy, sandwiched between France, Belgium and Germany, but it was responsible for creating pop radio as we know it. Many of the UK's best loved broadcasting personalities owe their careers to the station. Alan `Fluff' Freeman, David `Kid' Jensen and Tony Blackburn all cut their DJ-ing teeth at `Luxy'.
Launched in 1932, the station's commercial independence and willingness to try new formats got the establishment's back up. The BBC allegedly called it `scandalous, insolent and a pirate'. The pirate reputation stuck, despite the fact that Luxy was legitimate.
