DRINKING BEER, WINE, AND/OR LIQUOR three or more days a week improves one's chances of living free of heart disease, according to a study published in the January 9 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine. Researchers have found that frequent alcohol consumption goes hand-in-hand with lower risks of heart attack, of high cholesterol levels, and of diabetes--regardless of the type of alcohol, whether one drinks with or without a meal, and the amount consumed daily. Frequency is "the primary determinant of [alcohol consumption's] inverse association with the risk of myocardial infarction [heart attack]," says the study.
