Philip Doherty was struggling with his future. Having dropped out of high school and running with a bad crowd, the Worcester native was floating from job to job at local fast-food joints.
Until he found the Army.
"Before he left for training, he would sit at parties and think, `I don't belong here. I belong in the Army,' " said his mother, Jane Doherty, 47, of Burillville, R.I. "In the Army, he finally found a purpose. He was much happier."
Private First Class Doherty, 21, is on the ground in the Middle East with the 317th Engineer Battalion, likely dismantling minefields.
