Mar. 22--Retired Army Gen. Philip Browning Jr., the man heading the state effort to protect Georgia's military installations from the next round of base closings, says Columbus needs to be organized and diligent in its effort to protect Fort Benning.
While saying Fort Benning should survive the cuts in 2005, Browning said nothing could -- or should -- be taken for granted. No installation -- including Fort Benning -- is safe.
"I could make the case to close Fort Benning," Browning said. "Don't think it isn't going to happen. It could."
