Beginning June 29, CSX Transportation plans to close its mainline between Elkhorn City, Ky., and Greenwood, S.C., for 10 days to carry out a major rehabilitation. The railroad will install more than 170,000 feet of rail and 181,000 crossties, surface 195 miles of mainline track and rebuild bridges, tunnels and hundreds of road crossings. Sixteen teams with more than 900 people will be working on the project.
CSXT notes that under a normal 12-hour curfew process, the work would take more than 20 weeks of significant traffic disruption. The railroad expects service on this section to return to normal on ...
