An astute Oscar historian could well make the case that last night's Academy Awards show was the strangest and most totally surreal in the 75 years of the movie awards: It was definitely the most bizarre of the 23 that I've covered.
Granted, the potential for absolute disaster that seemed to hang over the event for the past week (because of its bad timing with Iraq war) never materialized, and it didn't disintegrate into the chaos of anti-war speeches it threatened to be.
