Article: Sulfur isotope analysis for the identification of sulfur sources.

A recent article in the Mineralogical Record (Pagano, 2002) described how some purportedly natural Sicilian sulfur specimens sold in the 1970's had actually been manufactured, and cannot be readily distinguished from natural specimens on the basis of morphology, associations or chemical analysis. In response to this problem, we have investigated the use of sulfur isotopes to discriminate between sulfur from a Sicilian source and sulfur from other sources such as salt domes. The specimens that were created in the 1970's and marketed as Sicilian are shown by this method to consist of non-Sicilian salt-dome sulfur crystallized over a Sicilian matrix.
