Northwest cuts flight schedule by 12 percent

Northwest Airlines Corp. is reducing its flight schedule by 12 percent because of a drop in demand caused by the war in Iraq.

The airline also plans to eliminate 4,900 jobs and take 20 jets out of service because of the schedule reduction.

The number of Detroit job cuts hasn't been determined, said Mary Stanik, Northwest manager of media relations. Eagan, Minn.-based Northwest (Nasdaq: NWAC) said all employee groups will be affected.
