Editor's Note: Wheelchair dancing emanated from ballroom dancing associated with dancers who were not disabled. Holland is generally credited as being the birth place of wheelchair dancing, started by Evert Castelein in the 1970s and furthered by Corrie van Mugten during the 1980s when she danced the Rumba with Ruud Vermeij during an International Dance Championship in the Royal Albert Hall, London, England. Since that memorable demonstration, wheelchair dancing has grown immensely and is presently wide spread throughout the world.
