Caitriona O'Reilly's debut collection, The Nowhere Birds, grows in strength as the volume progress. Many of the earlier poems are concerned with childhood and adolescence, while the later poems are more self-conscious, philosophical, and widely travelled. The effect, and one that is intended one suspects, is of watching the maturation of a poet. At her best, O'Reilly creates poems of an impersonal, indeed intellectual, variety. For instance, the conclusion (and even the title) of her poem 'Marmoreal' contains this difference from the familiar:
