WASHINGTON _ The pending battle for Baghdad, heart of the Iraqi regime, looms as the war's decisive event as U.S.-led coalition forces advance north toward the capital.
The battle is likely to proceed in stages - first with the coalition taking on the Republican Guard units ringing Baghdad, then engaging elite units and security forces stationed within the city.
"It will determine the outcome of the war," said P.W. Singer, an expert in modern warfare at the Brookings Institution.
