Perioperative managers and administrators responsible for surgical services in hospitals with busy ORs likely have heard the complaint "Why can't my procedures start on time?" from annoyed or angry surgeons. Often, far too many procedures start later than scheduled. To make matters worse, surgeons who operate at other hospitals invariably comment that things are much better there.
Detailed root-cause analyses might find that patients arriving late, missing paperwork or equipment, and anesthesiology delays contribute to late OR starts, as does surgeons arriving late. To solve the problem, perioperative managers may choose to convene a task force, hire consultants, ...
