The ringlets and high collars of so many period-musical leading ladies are absent. Rebecca Luker, her blond hair straight and shoulder length, the hint of a drawl betraying her Alabama roots, could be anybody's present-day girl next door.

Which is what so many Broadway producers have banked on when they cast Luker as, for example, Maria in ``The Sound of Music'' or Marian the starchy librarian of ``The Music Man.'' It's that straightforward wholesome charm combined with a voice that has few equals in the musical theater on either coast.
