Mar. 28--LAUDERDALE LAKES, Fla.--When Edward Dauer's parents put down a deposit for 47 acres to build the Florida Medical Center, Oakland Park Boulevard didn't reach far enough to hit the property next to Florida's Turnpike.
That was in December 1971 and Dauer still has the original invitation to the groundbreaking ceremony.
"There was a giant wooden scalpel, 6 feet tall," said Dauer, 52, surveying what is now a hospital campus and heart-surgery facility.
