With the war in Iraq now predicted to last months, experts say the conflict has become a crucible for the boldest and most controversial U.S. national security policy since the end of World War II.
Outlined by President Bush last year on the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, it is known formally as "The National Security Strategy of the United States of America" and familiarly as "the Bush Doctrine."
In essence, as the invasion of Iraq demonstrates, it calls for pre-emptive attacks against nations that pose a perceived threat to the United States.
