Mar. 30--Flanked by members of both area chambers of commerce and longtime supporters of a city convention center, Gov. Bill Richardson signed Senate Bill 1 into law Thursday, enacting a new hotel surcharge to fund the convention center.
"It's official," Richardson said in a brief ceremony at the Best Western Mesilla Valley Inn. "At 12:18 p.m. on this date, Las Cruces got something it should have had years ago." With the signing of SB 1, the governor brought a conclusion to years of legislative efforts to bring a convention center to Las Cruces.
