As the nation wrestles with what has been called a child obesity epidemic, school districts are struggling with budget deficits brought on by an economic recession. For the vending industry, the dual crises converge in a double whammy. The media has portrayed vending as the purveyor of bad nutrition, holding the school districts hostage with commission payments.
The average vending operator might not care a lot about schools. But when he thinks about it, the controversy over school vending makes him mad: the big soft drink bottlers get most of the school business with high commissions, then give the whole industry a black eye with their lousy service.
