For obvious political reasons, Ukraine has not figured very prominently in the cultural encyclopedia of the average American. A good characterization of this deficit is found in Walker Percy's Thanatos Syndrome, when someone asks a rhetorical question, "Who remembers Ukrainians?" taking for granted their complete disappearance as a nation from the human community, a disappearance not unlike the extinction of the dinosaur.
