Mar. 31--NEAR NAJAF, Iraq -- The 101st Airborne Division surrounded the city of Najaf on Sunday and prepared for a block-by-block assault to root out paramilitary elements loyal to Saddam Hussein.
The push to secure Najaf, a city of more than 500,000 people that is considered one of the holiest places in the Muslim world, provided the latest evidence that U.S. forces will try to secure cities along their march toward Baghdad before attempting to take the Iraqi capital.
