ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS

Douglas County-based Liberty Media Corp. abandoned its solo pursuit of -Hughes Electronics late Thursday, announcing that it has laid the groundwork for another partnership with News Corp.

News Corp. has granted Liberty Media an option to purchase $500 million of News Corp.'s stock - currently worth about $26.65 - at $21.50 a share within the next six months.

Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. could use that $500 million to bolster its war chest in a bid for a controlling stake in Hughes - and its coveted DirecTV satellite television division.
