Mar. 31--Twenty-four years ago this week, members of the Pennsylvania National Guard had a tough choice to make -- stay and help respond to the partial meltdown at Three Mile Island or get their families out of harm's way.
Many chose to evacuate their families. But the Pennsylvania National Guard's adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Gerald Sajer, chose to stay.
"I wasn't just staying because it was my duty to stay," Sajer, now retired, said. "Some 120,000 people left the Harrisburg area. They were fleeing. That's always a difficult problem."
