Apr. 2--The Daily News' extensive coverage of the San Fernando Valley secession movement was honored Tuesday as being the best public-service reporting performed by a metropolitan newspaper in California in 2002.

Awards in the Associated Press News Executives Council's annual contest will be presented May 17 in Santa Rosa at the group's annual convention. Newspapers competed in seven writing and seven photo and graphics categories in various divisions based on circulation.
