Squinty, whiny Jim Boeheim is a testament to endurance. He's proof that a sour reputation needn't last forever, and that critics can be turned around. Even his hangdog demeanor has started to fit him like an old cardigan sweater.
Syracuse finds itself in its third Final Four under Boeheim. Not bad for the school, even better for a coach roundly ridiculed for his basketball acumen not that long ago.
If the Orangemen can win what looks like a wide-open tournament in New Orleans, Boeheim will have reached the heights of college coaching. I was courtside the night he tumbled into the pits.
