AMTRAK has been forced to remove all 18 Acela Express high-speed trains from service on the Washington DC-New York-Boston Northeast Corridor, after finding defects in the power car yaw damper brackets. Some trains were later returned to service, but all trains in service are subject to extensive examinations between trips. Meanwhile, passengers are also being transported in slower locomotive-hauled trains.
Cracking and breaking yaw damper brackets were originally discovered on August 12, resulting in withdrawal of all the trains for inspection. Five trains found not to have defects were due to be returned to service on August 15, with all trains back in service ...
