GERMAN Rail's (DB) freight subsidiary, DB Cargo, has launched a major investment project to start the replacement of six classes of diesel locomotive. Tenders have been invited immediately for 200 diesel locomotives for delivery from December 2004 onwards, with an option for another 370 units from January 2006.

DB Cargo is willing to consider either electric or hydraulic transmission. The locomotives will be mounted on two two-axle bogies. They should weigh a maximum of 84 tonnes. DB wants the locomotives to be able to operate in Austria

The engine output should be a minimum of 2.2MW to give a traction output at the wheelset of a minimum of 18MW. ...
