Light rail is back in favour in Britain following a change of heart by the British government two years ago. While there are many projects in the pipeline, only one scheme is currently under construction, and it still takes many years to get projects off the drawing board.
NOTTINGHAM is currently the only British city building a light rail line. The city's first 14km line is due to open in November 2003. Light rail projects are at an advanced stage of planning in Leeds and Portsmouth and expect to start construction soon. Manchester and Birmingham plan major expansion schemes.
