On December 18, 2002, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Mark McClennan announced the Consumer Health Information for Better Nutrition initiative, which is intended to provide consumers with "more and better information" about the health benefits of conventional foods and dietary supplements.

The initiative is intended to promote sound dietary decisions by providing consumers with truthful, accurate scientific information. Importantly, FDA is reversing its long-held position on health claims, and will now permit qualified health claims that meet a "weight of scientific evidence" standard for both conventional foods and dietary supplements. ...
