30,000 B.C. Migrating hunter/gatherers, called the San, settle in the Kalahari plain.

A.D. 1000 Khoekhoe, Herero (Bantu), and other people from the north and south move into certain areas occupied by the San and displace them; the San move into the desert. The newcomers raise cattle, sheep, and goats; farm; and make pottery.

1652 Jan van Riebeeck, a merchant from the Dutch East India Trading Company, founds the first European colony in this region of Africa, at Cape Town in the far south. Over the next century, many more Dutch settlements are founded.
