The amount of core grocery products sold on promotion in the multiples smashed the 5bn [pounds sterling] barrier last year, according to research by Taylor Nelson Sofres.

The data, revealed here for the first time, show promotional sales growing at a much faster rate than overall sales of packaged groceries. TNS says they were up 15% year-on-year, while overall sales grew just 5%.

That means promotions in the multiples now account for 18.5% of total sales--up from 16.9%.
