Continued surveillance is essential to monitor changes in acyclovir resistance and to characterise the clinical and public health importance of acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex virus (HSV).
Genital herpes is epidemic in the US and long-term therapy with acyclovir in suppressive doses favours the development of resistance. Researchers studied the prevalence of, and risk factors for, resistance in 3,602 people with suspected genital herpes who attended sexually transmitted disease clinics.
Herpes simplex virus was isolated in 2,088 subjects and 90.2 per cent were HSV-2. Of these, 15 were acyclovir-resistant. Three (0.18 per ...
