Marcel Marceau, who has taken pantomime from clamorous streets to cushy theater seats, speaks in a sonorous, lilting accent that makes a listener think that he might just offer him a glass of fine wine.

For nearly 60 years, Marceau has told stories of birth, death and seemingly everything in between using just his body, hands and expressive face. He has braced against stiff winds and built whole villages, seemingly with his empty hands.

He has communicated so much with his "art of silence" that hearing him speak, even in a telephone interview, is startling.
