Dear Carol: How do you prune the large flowered clematis, "Dr. Ruppel?' - M.C., Syracuse.
Dear M.C.: Clematis fall into three groups for pruning purposes, depending on whether they bloom on old wood from last year, on new wood that will grow this year, or on both.
"Dr. Ruppel' flowers on both, so what you would do is prune lightly any time now, cutting out dead and spindly wood first. Clematis starts into growth very early in the season.
Then cut each stem back individually to a pair of strong buds. Stagger the heights a bit, but don't cut off very much. Spread the stems apart and tie them ...
