ATLANTA -- Wool was good enough for the early 20th century explorers like Ernest Shackleton, but the natural fiber fell out of favor in the outdoors industry about 20 years ago with the advent of synthetic fibers. Now wool is back, and it's better than ever.
The big drawbacks to wool have been that it itches, shrinks when washed and takes a long time to dry. But it has wonderful inherent properties, too, such as breathability, body-temperature regulating ability, soil resistance and flame retardance. It's also a renewable resource and biodegradable.
Now, thanks to modern technology, wool can be machine washed, and if it's fine enough, the itchy factor ...
