On Friday, 20 November 1598, the 14-year-old Queen Margaret of Austria entered the city of Mantua as part of her journey through northern Italy, together with her mother, Archduchess Maria, her cousin Archduke Albert, and a great retinue. (1) Her marriage to the newly crowned Philip III of Spain (represented by proxy) had been celebrated by Pope Clement VIII in Ferrara the previous Sunday, in the presence of a great number of princes and cardinals from all over Italy. At the same time, her cousin Albert had married Isabella, the Infanta of Spain (also by proxy) and half-sister of Philip III, in order further to strengthen the Austrian-Spanish Habsburg alliance.
