A NEW train concept for combining single freight wagons in a block train has been developed by ABX Logistics and Optimus for two national retail groups in Germany, Karstadt Quelle and Metro. The system is now being tested between Unna, near Dortmund, and Furth in Bavaria by a private rail operator, NetLog Netzwerk Logistik. The contract runs for an initial period of three months. DB Cargo ran the block train service up to the end of 2002.
The DEx train combines groups of wagons from Unna and Gutersloh, and on arrival in Furth they are marshalled into groups destined for Nuremberg, Augsburg, and ...
