Key West, Fla. -- At 200 pounds, the lemon shark wasn't big enough to rule the sea. But it could have made a memorable statement at a beach. This was on a recent day, and Billy Delph and I were 30 miles west of Key West, just off the Marquesas Islands. The water was flat and clear, the sky blue.
We had watched smaller sharks all morning, their movements traced by shadows cast on the turtle grass. Most were black tips, and the usual nurse sharks. We had slung a big barracuda, its sides peeled back by a sharp knife, from the bow of our boat, and the eviscerated fish trickled blood into the current. Crossing it, some ...
